Is it possible to move folders to a new catalog?

I started off with one MASSIVE catalog of an entire folder with hundreds of sub-folders because I had no idea what I was doing or what the best approach would be.

Now, when adding new photos to my catalog I have to refresh the entire catalog and it takes hours and hours to refresh.

Can I break up the catalog into individual catalogs per sub-folder without needing to rebuild each catalog from scratch?

What is the best approach for cataloging hundreds of thousands of photos and more than a thousand folders?
