One major new feature in NeoFinder 8.8 allows you to specify exactly which metadata fields you wish to copy, so you can later paste these annotations and more to other files.
Even more power for you, as that includes things like the GPS GeoTag, EXIF Capture Date, Finder Tags, Finder comment, color label, and more.
We have expanded the NeoFinder Users Guide with more details:

Do you know AMR files?

Do you know AMR files?
No, these are definitely not
cooking pots...
If you use your iPhone for voice notes, and transfer these to your Mac, that is the
Apple Message Recording format that Apple uses for the audio recordings.
NeoFinder 8.8 can now get the basic
metadata contained in these files for you, and even a
short audio snippet, if you want one.

Rename files the other way...
Posted: Thu Jan 09, 2025 5:09 pm
by neo-admin
The new ability to change the
names of items in NeoFinder catalogs using
AppleScript allows for some very exciting things.
Like a script to replace parts of file names with a different part.
In case your rock band has recorded a lot of live videos, but they show the wrong name of the city in their name!
The NeoFinder Users Guide has more, and the new AppleScript Power example "Replace file name parts":

Sort your Albums
Posted: Thu Jan 23, 2025 10:37 am
by neo-admin
NeoFinder 8.8 now remembers the
sorting order and
direction separately for each Album!
That is especially helpful if you use a manual sort order for one Album, and sort another Album by EXIF Capture Date, for example.

Undo selection in Icon View
Posted: Thu Jan 23, 2025 10:40 am
by neo-admin
The Icon View in NeoFinder 8.8 now preserves previous selections and provides an "Undo" for these last selections.
That is super helpful in case you erroneously click somewhere else, and the whole selection is lost.
Now you can just Undo, or even redo that.

PDF metadata!
Posted: Tue Jan 28, 2025 12:39 pm
by neo-admin
NeoFinder 8.8 has been enhanced to catalog additional metadata out of PDF files.
These are the special PDF keywords (in additional to possibly also existing XMP keywords), the document title, and the author information.
You can check and edit these values in Apples
Preview.app, for example.
This shows the keywords as edited in Preview.app:

Find the "flat" keyword!

by neo-admin
The contextual menu in the Controlled Vocabulary window in NeoFinder 8.8 now also includes a search command to locate all items using the keyword in its non-hierarchical form.
That will help you convert existing "flat" keywords to a new hierarchical version.

Video contact sheets, lots of them!
Posted: Mon Feb 03, 2025 4:41 pm
by neo-admin
NeoFinder 8.8 adds another option to the
Services menu of Apples macOS Finder.
You can now create video contact sheets for
multiple selected files at once!
Just select the files you want, and use that Services menu command. NeoFinder will then offer you to create the
Movie Contact Sheet for all these files, and is able to place the newly created image files in the same folder as the original movie file, or in a new, separate folder. Just as you need.

NeoFinder Users Guide has more:

Convert ".aac" files!
Posted: Tue Feb 04, 2025 3:09 pm
by neo-admin
The integrated
Audio Converter in NeoFinder 8.8 can now convert raw ".aac" audio files into many other formats, like .m4a, which are usually better suited for playback with other software.
These ".aac" files are actually a flat "AAC" data stream, a very different format as the well-known .m4a song files.

Who owns the XMP file?
Posted: Wed Feb 05, 2025 4:16 pm
by neo-admin
Who owns the XMP
sidecar?
The infamous XMP "sidecar" files contain structured metadata, such as your ratings, keywords, captions, and a lot more.
NeoFinder and other applications create these separate files if the media file itself cannot hold that metadata, such as for some RAW formats, or some video formats.
The problem here is that the ".xmp" suffix is usually used by replacing the actual media file suffix. So for a file named "NMD_2201.NEF" the XMP file name will be "NMD_2201.xmp". Which is OK, until you ALSO have a file named "NMD_2201.JPG" in the same folder. Because then the question is: Which media file does that XMP data actually belong to?
NeoFinder 8.8 answers that question once and for all. It adds and uses specially designed metadata inside the XMP file to assign it to the media file. This utilizes the standard data fields also used by other applications for better compatibility.
This extra information is now also cataloged by NeoFinder, and NeoFinder will honor it when renaming, exporting or copying media files. When files are renamed, NeoFinder will even update that information inside the renamed XMP files as well.

"AOMedia Video 1" Codec support
Posted: Fri Feb 07, 2025 4:59 pm
by neo-admin
NeoFinder 8.8 adds support to catalog thumbnails and metadata of video files encoded with the new "
AV1"
open video codec ("AOMedia Video 1").
The Inspector will be able to show the proper name of that codec for your video files.
The NeoFinder Users Guide has more about how NeoFinder supports cataloging and managing video and movie files:

You probably want to install the free
ffmpeg plugin for NeoFinder to get
additional file format support as well:

Like the display of
