Let's start with an overview of the new features in NeoFinder 8.6.
The immensely popular
QuickFind global search tool has received a massive upgrade.
As requested by many users, you can now specify which
types of files you search, and you can also limit the search to just the
selected catalogs.
We have already updated the NeoFinder Users Guide with all the new features of QuickEdit for you:
https://www.cdfinder.de/guide/5/5.1/quickfind.html
Of course, the even more powerful Find Editor is also around, and has so many additional abilities:

To show, or not to show? Display Filter reloaded
Posted: Fri Apr 19, 2024 7:57 am

The Display Filter in NeoFinder 8.6 has been massively expanded, and yes, you can now hide folders!
A new settings popup window gives you fine tuned control over what you want to see, and you can even use multiple options at the same time, allowing to see just, for example, all landscape photos with a GPS GeoTag, keywords, but no Person data yet.
You can even have NeoFinder only show currently available file on online volumes.

Excel!

NeoFinder can now read textual contents from Apple Pages, Apple Numbers, Apple Keynote, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Powerpoint files. That allows you to search for text content in these file types with Neofinder as well.
We have updated the NeoFinder Users Guide for this:

GoPro!

Another often requested ability is reading .GPR files written by the popular GoPro Action Cameras,
The custom GoPro file format has no integrated thumbnails, so NeoFinder needed to be able to actually read and understand the file format. With some help of a code library from GoPro, we were able to accomplish that for you.
Not only will you get a thumbnail and all integrated metadata, including GPS GeoTags, and more, but NeoFinder can also show you the GPS files in its built-in Light Table, and export these photo files into other formats, like JPG or HEIC.
Enjoy!

Yes, NeoFinder can catalog thumbnails and metadata of Apple ProRAW photo files!
And you can add ratings, keywords, descriptions and all, too.
And convert these files to other formats.
And check every pixel in the Light Table.
And build beautiful web galleries with them.
And so on.

We have updated the NeoFinder Users Guide to contain the latest information about that.

Filter offline files!
Posted: Tue May 21, 2024 1:42 pm
by neo-admin
Among many other things, the Display Filter in NeoFinder 8.6 can filter out all items from offline volumes for you, so you see only those files currently available on your Mac!
That means that files cataloged from volumes that are currently not mounted on your Mac can be filtered out. Or only those shown on offline volumes.

Copy files
Posted: Thu Jul 11, 2024 4:11 pm
by neo-admin
"Save Copy as..." copies files and folders directly from inside of NeoFinder.
This allows you to quickly copy a very large number of files and folders to a new destination.
We had previously used AppleScript to let the macOS Finder perform the actual copy process, but that turned out to be too buggy and slow for more than about 250 files at once.
So now NeoFinder does the copy fast and efficiently itself. And yes, it will also copy along those XMP sidecar files with the metadata in them for you.
We have updated the NeoFinder Users Guide with this information:

How many EXIF dates are there?
Posted: Fri Jul 12, 2024 2:47 pm
by neo-admin
By default, the integrated EXIF Date Time Editor in NeoFinder writes only the proper "exif capture date" value.
As the EXIF specification allows for three separate date fields, and some other applications read a different field, you can ask NeoFinder to set all three fields to the same value.
As this is used not too often, it is currently a hidden setting, and documented in the NeoFinder Users Guide:

Video Contact Sheet for Sony MXF!
Posted: Tue Jul 16, 2024 12:25 pm
by neo-admin
If Apples ProRes Video Codecs are installed, the Video Contact Sheet in NeoFinder can be used with
Sony MXF video files!
If you don't use either Apples Final Cut Pro X, or Apple Motion, and Apple Compressor, you can download the ProRes Video Codec installer separately directly from Apple here:
https://support.apple.com/en-us/106396
Find out more about the Video Contact Sheet in the NeoFinder Users Guide:
https://www.cdfinder.de/guide/22/22.1/m ... sheet.html
Other video file formats that NeoFinder uses for the contact sheet are: MOV, MP4, M4V, AVI, MT2, M2TS, M2V, TS, MPG, and MPEG.

Video Converter details!

Sometimes, it really is the little things. Like the built-in Video Converter in NeoFinder. If you run it for just a single file (and sure, it can convert many files at once for you, too!), NeoFinder will display the technical details of the original video file.

Display Filter - Recents!
Posted: Wed Jul 24, 2024 9:47 am
by neo-admin
Use the Display Filter in NeoFinder to tell exactly what you want to see, and what not.
The new "Recents" option for the
name filter makes it easier to quickly use the last recently used values again.
We have updated the NeoFinder Users Guide with more details on how that works:

Video Color Profile!
Posted: Wed Jul 24, 2024 10:09 am
by neo-admin
NeoFinder is able to catalog the
color profile description of MP4 and MOV
video files, but doing so requires a possibly lengthy query to the Spotlight plugin for video files, which means that this can be really slow.
As a lot of people don't really need that color profile name, we have deactivated that feature by default to make sure that cataloging runs as fast as possible.
But if you want to see that information, well, here it is:
