Really open them all?

More cool little things new in NeoFinder 8.8:

When you select more than 9 files to be opened by any external application, NeoFinder will ask you a quick confirmation.

Pretty helpful when, in the heat of the moment, you have selected two thousand photos to be opened in Adobe Photoshop, or Affinity Photo... ;)

Search your menu!

The Help menu in NeoFinder 8.8 now has the option to search for menu commands!

That is pretty useful if you can't find a specific command in the many menus of NeoFinder, or if you are uncertain where to look.

Use that change to check out the other items in the Help menu as well, maybe there are some things you haven't seen yet...

ProCamera.app iOS - Read the GPS!

NeoFinder 8.8 now supports GPS GeoTags written into MOV video files by the ProCamera.app on iOS.

That software uses a slightly incorrect ISO format that NeoFinder will now properly process for you when cataloging such video files.

Read more about what you can do with the GPS GeoTags in the NeoFinder Users Guide: https://www.cdfinder.de/guide/20/neofin ... gging.html

The NeoFinder Users Guide has more about how you can use AppleScript to automate NeoFinder for your workflows: https://www.cdfinder.de/guide/9/neofind ... cript.html

Flatten the curve!

Exporting a very large Catalog into the text format now uses a LOT less memory with NeoFinder 8.8.

After receiving some reports from users telling us that NeoFinder Catalogs with more than 15 million files and folders would need a lot of memory during the export into the text format, we have inspected the code and massively reduced that amount for NeoFinder 8.8.

Now the memory usage curve is nice and flat, as it shall be.

Enjoy!

More ffmpeg!

NeoFinder uses the extremely powerful free ffmpeg tool to get more metadata and thumbnails out of video files when you catalog them.

We cannot really bundle ffmpeg directly with NeoFinder, due to license restrictions, so we document where you can place the ffmpeg executable file for NeoFinder to find and use it.

NeoFinder 8.8 will now automatically discover ffmpeg installations by Homebrew, to the local path "/opt/homebrew/bin/ffmpeg"

https://formulae.brew.sh/formula/ffmpeg

Sony MXF video metadata

Sony video cameras write very interesting special metadata into MXF files, but unfortunately, their latest firmware update has changed the specific tag they are using to mark that data.

We have adapted NeoFinder 8.8 to be able to read that valuable metadata from both the old and the new location now. Enjoy!

Faster Metadata for HEIC

Writing metadata into HEIC files created by iOS 18.x on Apple iPhone PRO and MAX models is much faster now with NeoFinder.

This was quite tricky, as Apple writes some very strange XMP metadata into these files, but only on these iPhone models.

They actually write THREE separate, but only partial XMP records, very weird. But we managed to make it so that NeoFinder can still add and modify proper XMP metadata in these files, and much faster now.

Read more about how NeoFinder can manage your ratings, keywords, captions, and more metadata for photos and videos: https://www.cdfinder.de/guide/13/13.1/n ... ridge.html

Better error messages

Error messages? Not so much fun, but important nonetheless.

So. If you try to generate a video contact sheet of a file format or codec that NeoFinder currently doesn't support, you will now get a proper error message.

Read more about contact sheets in the NeoFinder Users Guide: https://www.cdfinder.de/guide/22/22.1/m ... sheet.html

Album Memberships

NeoFinder 8.8 adds the ability to write back Album Membership information into the actual media files, using the established XMP metadata. That makes the NeoFinder Album membership information available to other applications, and makes them more reliable for long-term storage and data exchange.

To initiate this process, select the file(s) you wish to update, and select the contextual menu.
Or select an entire Album in LIBRARY, and use the Contextual Menu there.

The NeoFinder Users Guide has been updated with all details: https://www.cdfinder.de/guide/7/7.5/alb ... ships.html
